Warm Comfort
Opelvillen Schleuse Project Room, Rüsselsheim 2013
Elif Erkan uses traditional methods of sculpture to explore the potential of contemporary sculpture. The artist alienates in her work day to day items such as clothes and dishes to objects in which use and destruction are perceived as solidified acts and frozen moments of time, motion and chance.
For the SCHLEUSE Elif Erkan, has developed new work during her stay in the LABOR. Folded and balled socks are in the work „Tidy container“ frozen into impressions of soap and have spread as similar to a slightly messy household all over the floor. The systematics of storing clothes structures the formlessness of the textile material, the contrast between material and shape is enhanced by the transfer into soap. The work „Rejuventaion“, alienated household robots that are produced industrially, highlights the moment of mechanical catharsis and through this they do form a link between the works „Tidy container“ and „Warm Comfort“.
In her work Elif Erkan is interested into pop-cultural imagery which alludes to the contemporary representation of melancholy, crisis and depression.
The work „Warm Comfort“, consists of industrially prefabricated mineral wool sheets, which are stacked with plaster and attached to a bungee cord. Mineral wool is used for insulation and insulating homes. Elif Erkan draws in this work a parallel to the inner personal space. Layering, isolating, alienating and daming allude to personal, individual strategies of repression.
