Titled IN BLOOM, the exhibition explores summer vacation and summer housing as a cultural invention specific to a certain period in the modernisation of Turkey, which holds together evolving concepts around work life balance,&#38;nbsp; performance and social class as well as land use and housing development as colonizing activities. Operating like an immersive installation, the exhibition is centered around a series of marble sculptures representing housing models in abstract, hollowed, uninhabited form to convey their detachment from ideas associated with “home”. In using marble, Erkan draws upon the material’s organic qualities and associations with both running water and kitchen and bathroom designs to turn domesticity inside out.The surrounding landscape paintings and puzzle pieces humourously expand on the threefold design quest modern summer housing projects must meet: the house must function as an object of speculation; it must be in proximity to beaches; it must have a view. The found landscape paintings these houses face are concealed behind rust and monochrome beige paint as a reference to the numbing repetition of the same, and temporal corrosion. Like obstructed windows, they turn the romantic idea of “looking inwards while looking out“ into a modernist abstraction achieved through the use of a facade technique used in construction, sgraffito, to scratch their surfaces. Fragmented images of domestic animals in idealized poses are at the heart of Erkan’s puzzle pieces where growth and decay are simultaneous as skin-like plasticine meets the puzzles and like a living organism, co-evolves with them, pointing to the seasonal adoption of pet animals, and their abandonment simultaneously. Large photographic prints from the artist’s own archive depicting abandoned summer houses, and garbage bins provide an immersive, documentarian backdrop to the installation. In the modernist project, while summer vacation was a means to engineer lifestyles and manage the productivity of the middle class work force through calculated relaxation times and leisure activities, the coastal construction boom was engineering the landscape, turning coastal land into building plots. Erkan’s installation activates this collective memory in Turkey, with strong affective ties to past dreams of modernity anchored in the bygone era of 1980s and 1990s liberal development policies, and the ensuing collective disillusionment.

La bocca della verita (Der Mund der Wahrheit), ist eine neue Videoarbeit der Künstlerin Elif Erkan, die im Rahmen des Programms Speak-Easy des Ve.sch Kunstverein gezeigt wird. 

 
Der Titel der Arbeit verweist auf ein scheibenförmiges Relief, welches sich in Rom befindet. Der Legende nach verliert jeder seine Hand, der diese in die Mundöffnung legt und dabei nicht die Wahrheit sagt. 


In Erkans performativen Video ist der Mund der Wahrheit zwei geteilt. Das nach Wahrhaftigkeit und Authentizität strebende Selbst, dargestellt durch eine die Künstlerin selbst darstellende Chin-Puppet und dem theatralisch dargestellten sprechenden Mund, welches die Wahrheit als Tugend besingt. Am Ende stellt sich die Frage ist das Wahrhaftige Selbst nicht nur eine Performance, in der Speak-Easy nicht nur Form, Metapher, sondern auch Lippenbekenntnis zugleich ist?

And since there are all those ships,I can stick myself to,traveling is as uneventful as it was never before.

It’s all about transportation. Food is crossing the whole world to arrive on our plates, online shopping has become an everyday activity and on any day of the year you can get on board one of those gigantic floating villages which are invading the oceans. Is this all sustainable? Is this good for our planet? Of course not. The answer is simple. But it won’t stop. Elif Erkan develops the questions revolving around her artistic practice from these socio-ecological issues.

We live in a throw-away society. Packaging companies produce meticulously designed packaging to make it easier and safer to send goods on their long journey around the world. Walter Gropius would be thrilled at the perfection of form and use of these objects. But in the end they just end up in the garbage. Elif emphasizes this process: the cardboard boxes she finds – such as cases of memory cards or steering wheels
– she covers with a self-developed biodegradable plasticine: plastic without plastic.The resulting objects – exhibited on the gallery walls – elude any iconography. Her clay poles How to wait seem just as undefined. Barriers and stalagmites in one. Both forms exemplify the act of waiting, the human and the natural, and at the same time they raise the question about the future. Nature waits centuries for a stalagmite of this size to form. How long can we patiently wait? How long can our Earth wait? There is no doubt that the world is changing rapidly, the lungs of our planet are being put under great strain. To this regard, the video work Sometimes, when I’m drifting (2008-2022) can be seen as an auspice and a hypothetical response to the artist’s questions. I the foreground, light waves crash against the rocks, while the evanescent image of a floating jellyfish accompanies the narration through Erkan’s voice, which expresses the marine animal’s inner thoughts. In the background a cruise ship is sailing int the sunset, slowly obscuring it and the whole image is bathed in a red-orange light. The vision couldn’t be more idyllic, but appearances are deceptive. Like cruise ships propagating the protection of the ocean while at the same time polluting it. Not even a rhyming name in this case can help to fix the puzzle.

The gallery is pleased to announce Elif Erkan‘s first solo show in Turkey.Where You They Form is a site-specific installation commissioned for T H E P I L L ® in which speculations on origins, territoriality and theromanticism of progress are approachedin menhir-like sculptures that usher the viewer through the gallery.Fragments of the artist‘s body casted in tin lay embedded on the ground. The artists body turnes into a reflective point of origin speculating on the existing relationship between the artist‘s body and the sculptural productions itself. Furthermore, the body is treated like an archeological relict which turns the exhibition into a burial site.

Erkan. An opening reception will be held Sunday, April 24 from 1-4pm, and the show will be on view

through June 4, 2016.

Erkan’s exhibition centers on a group of concrete sculptures that line the middle of the gallery.

Standing upright on their thin edges, the works follow the footprint of the space along its L-shape.

Operating like a barricade, together they block out a path for their audience, dictating specific

directions of movement along the perimeter, and calibrating their own reception. The works reveal

drawn, undulating shapes that bend forward and backward along their faces. Seemingly left behind

as performative documents, her works are displayed like archeological artifacts of everyday stuff,

portrayed in uncanny shapes and composed of recognizable construction materials. Embedded in

their surfaces are bursts of beige pigments and neon construction levels, which joke by parading as

organic and “balanced” objects.

The title of the show, “ex oriente lux” refers to the classical notion that culture and enlightenment

come from the “East.” Erkan’s sculptures function like containers that address how Eastern concepts

of being and wellness have woven themselves into West coast American culture, and are in turn

utilized as contemporary salves for negativity, fear, and depression. Erkan draws from philosophical

ideas about the self, processing them into sculptural formulas that here, in their completed states,

appear mute or slumped. Erkan works with and against her sculptures’ immediate, robust sense of

force and weight by figuring them into states of exhaustion and weakness, all tinged with pathos.

Her works oftentimes look found, but they are in fact formed and composed according to specific

parameters she sees fit for a context, in terms of sculptural material (in this case, concrete and

plasticine), pictorial content (kale, fish oil, beige pigments), and scale. Erkan’s wall works in plasticine

are cast from junk food containers and bear health food products on their surfaces. The shape of a

plastic cake tray turned on its side begins to look like some sort of semicircle oracle, and placed

alongside a second, looks like a pair of ears or quotations, listening to the concrete works on the floor

or perhaps marking out the space as a section of a larger text or project.

We are proud to present Lotus Eaters, an exhibition of sculptural works by Los Angeles-based artist Elif Erkan organized in collaboration with the Villa Aurora. Beyond the ancient myth of the lotophages who consumed the narcotic fruits and flowers of the lotus tree, this new group of works references modern figures, substances, and notions of alternative living such as Robert Bootzin; natural and chemical remedies; or Henry Miller’s memoir describing his time in Big Sur. Fictions of good life are placed in relationship to an aesthetics of apathy. Plaster casts firmly enclose material references to fictional recollections solidifying them into apparently faint gestures.Can an object suffer depression? Could it escape?

The solo exhibition at Weiss Berlin will feature her latest group of works, in which the artist is working with felt and metal. The “felt paintings” are touching upon problems of modern life and constant self-optimization. “Does Success Love Me?”, for example, shows a calculation of the numeric value of the letters of the sentence „Success Loves Me” with crossed out numbers. The result is the answer to the question the title begs: 95% – in red felt. Erkan reverses the neoliberal demand to love success by making it the subject and the person who pursuits it the object.

The felt works are complemented by tin sculptures. Their production refers to a Turkish tradition that is supposed to banish evil spirits and purify the individual’s energy: melted tin is poured into a bowl that is filled with cold water and held over the person’s head. The shape that the material has assumed is discussed and analyzed afterwards. On the opening night, there will be a performance referencing this practice.
